Indian Army Lieutenant Colonel, soldier killed in north Sikkim avalanche Sikkim: Two men of the Indian Army's patrolling-cum-snow clearance party lost their lives in an avalanche that hit an Indian Army post in North Sikkim. In an official relase, the Army confirmed the deaths of the two soldiers. The statement said that Lieutenant Colonel Robert TA and Sapper Sapala Shanmukha Rao lost their lives.  The statement read: "Inspite of the best efforts of the rescue team and local formation an officer Lieutenant Colonel Robert TA and Sapper/ OPEM Sapala Shanmukha Rao who were trapped under the ice lost their lives. All other members of the team are safe."

  TRAINS TO RESUME Passenger trains connecting Delhi with 15 cities will start from 12 May. Bookings open from 4 pm tomorrow. The Indian Railways on Sunday evening announced that it will gradually restart passenger train operations from May 12, initially with 15 pairs of trains. In a statement, the national transporter said that booking for reservation in these trains will start at 4 pm on 11 May and will be available only on the IRCTC website at irctc.co.in. The Indian Railways noted that ticket booking counters at stations will remain closed and no counter tickets (including platform tickets) will be issued. 

Gangtok 08 May 2020 :  Today, a combination of Indian Army and IAF helicopters and Indian Army troops were pressed into service to undertake a daring evacuation of the crew of IAF helicopters and Air Dispatch crew, stranded on the icy heights of North Sikkim due to an emergency landing of IAF helicopters in a remote and inaccessible area. Evacuation of the four IAF crew and Air Dispatch personnel from a super high altitude emergency landing site, braving snow blizzards and undulating ground, which required synergy between the helicopters and ground based rescue parties, stands testimony to the spirit of the Armed Forces of India. The rescue operation demanded pushing to limits, both man and machine, for the successful extrication of the stranded crew.  The stranded military personnel braved inclement weather conditions for several hours before being evacuated. SIKKIM Press Release 172 RETURNEES BROUGHT IN TODAY On the third day, a total of 172 Sikkimese evacuated from different parts of the country arrived at the screening centres set up at Melli and Rangpo. There were 93 persons from South and West district. Out of ninety three people, twenty eight (28) were from South and sixty five (65) were from West. After going through thorough screening assessment following all safety protocols, the returnees were found to be asymptomatic. A total of twenty two (22) people belonging to South District have been sent to institutional quarantine centre at IHCAE Chemchey which is free of cost. While six (6) remaining have opted for paid quarantine facilities at Hotel Pangolin, Assangthang. The stranded people of West Sikkim have also been handed over to West District administration. A total of 79 persons returned through Rangpo checkpost. Among them, 73 are from East district and six from North district. After medical screening, 45 persons

As per the Chief Secretary, the first step to come back to Sikkim, one must register herself or himself . The online registration system to facilitate return of people of Sikkim stranded in different parts of the country was formally launched by the Hon'ble Chief Minister yesterday at Samman Bhawan. Sikkim Govt COVID-19 Registration Web Site Later, a press conference was convened by the State Chief Secretary to ensure that the information about the online registration system reaches all concerned through various media. It may be noted that each and every person who are stranded outside the State have to go through the online registration process.
